Hen Sondheim And James Lapines Urbane Musical Twist On Fairy
NEW YORK The scintillating new revival of Into the Woods is rendered so harmoniously and meticulously, youll swear you even hear the punctuation marks in the lyrics. Here at the St. James Theatre, where the musical had its official Broadway opening Sunday night, the memory of the late Stephen Sondheim is honored in the best way possible: by actors who really know how to sing, and singers who really know how to act.
Theyve all been encouraged by an inspired director, Lear deBessonet, to bring the bravura. That impulse on other occasions might bend the theatrical arc toward camp. But for the brand of musical comedy that Sondheim and book writer James Lapine were after a storybook world of out-of-control anxiety some rib-tickling personal dazzle is absolutely the right way to go.
One after another, the members of the exceptional cast Sara Bareilles, Phillipa Soo, Gavin Creel, Patina Miller, Brian dArcy James, Joshua Henry, and on and on add funny new twists to fairy-tale characters old and completely new. Theres no one who doesnt rise to this special occasion, the Broadway transfer of a concert version that originated earlier this year in the long-standing Encores series at City Center, the institution that birthed the 10,000-performance-plus revival of Chicago.
Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre Production 2010
The Olivier Award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production, directed by Timothy Sheader and choreographed by Liam Steel, ran for a six-week limited season from 6 August to 11 September 2010. The cast included Hannah Waddingham as the Witch, as the Baker, Jenna Russell as the Baker’s wife, Helen Dallimore as Cinderella, and Judi Dench as the recorded voice of the Giant. Gareth Valentine was the Musical Director. The musical was performed outdoors in a wooded area. Whilst the book remained mostly unchanged, the subtext of the plot was dramatically altered by casting the role of the Narrator as a young school boy lost in the woods following a family argument â a device used to further illustrate the musical’s themes of parenting and adolescence.
The production was recorded in its entirety, available to download and watch from Digital Theatre.

What To Watch For

- Broadway orchestras often perform in a pit or sometimes off to the side of the stage, but in Into the Woods, the actors perform at the front of the stage, and the entire orchestra is visible behind them.
- To promote the original Broadway production of Into the Woods, a gigantic boot was built to hang off the Martin Beck Theatre, a reference to the Giant’s Wife featured in the musical. The boot isn’t there for this revival, but on stage, the giant is represented by two heeled boots that are taller than the actors!
- Puppeteers move those boots, and a puppeteer also operates Milky White, Jack’s cow, in Into the Woods. Kennedy Kanagawa, the puppeteer, has become a fan-favorite performer in this revival!
- Lots of celebrities have flocked to the woods in the show’s history. Worldwide, Jessie Mueller and and Laura Benanti have played Cinderella Phylicia Rashad, Vanessa Williams, and Hannah Waddingham have played the Witch Imelda Staunton, Amy Adams, and Sutton Foster have played the Baker’s Wife and Neil Patrick Harris and Skylar Astin have played the Baker, to name a few. Plus, celebrities who have cameoed as the voice of the Giant’s Wife include Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Judi Dench, and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton!
- This Into the Woods revival is the first Broadway production of the show not directed by James Lapine, who also wrote the musical’s book. Lear deBessonet, the artistic director of Encores! at New York City Center, helms this production.

Conversations With Frank Rich And Others
On February 1, 2011, Sondheim joined former theater critic Nancy Melich before an audience of 1,200 at . Melich described the evening:
He was visibly taken by the university choir, who sang two songs during the evening, “Children Will Listen” and “Sunday”, and then returned to reprise “Sunday”. During that final moment, Sondheim and I were standing, facing the choir of students from the ‘s opera program, our backs to the audience, and I could see tears welling in his eyes as the voices rang out. Then, all of a sudden, he raised his arms and began conducting, urging the student singers to go full out, which they did, the crescendo building, their eyes locked with his, until the final “on an ordinary Sunday” was sung. It was thrilling, and a perfect conclusion to a remarkable evening nothing ordinary about it.
