In rooms with well-worn floors, gaps often appear between individual boards, mainly caused by repeated weather-related expansion and contraction cycles. When joints separate on tongue-and-groove boards, the upper edge of the groove is vulnerable to splitting, which can expose the tongue of the adjacent board.
The easiest way to repair this kind of fracture is by replacing the upper half of the broken groove with a Dutchman patch. Mark the ends of the fractured area, then measure 114 further and mark this measurement across the width of the board .
Next, use a router and/or a sharp chisel to carefully pare away wood within the scribed lines to the depth of the original groove . Work slowly, checking the depth every few passes.
Youll need a piece of closely matched wood to finish the repair. Carefully choose wood of the same species and grain pattern as the piece that was removed. You can sometimes take a piece of matching wood from original flooring in an out-of-sight area like an attic, crawl space, or closet. Cut the new board to fit, leaving it a little higher than the neighboring surface.
Once you have a good fit, carefully tape the top to the edges of the new wood and the surrounding material , and apply epoxy to the mating surfaces. Drop the board into position , and rest something heavy on it to keep it from shifting. Any glue squeeze-out will be removed with the tape.
Repair A Chip In A Laminate Floor Using An Acrylic Filler
Once again, thoroughly clean the area around the chip using a damp, lint-free cloth and vacuuming if needed. Prepare to use your acrylic filler according to the manufacturer’s instructions. When you’re ready to begin, insert the tip of the tube into the chip and slowly begin to fill the hole with the acrylic filler. If the hole is small , you can fill it entirely now.
If the chip is more prominent, though, you’ll need to apply the acrylic in thin layers, letting each layer dry for a few hours between applications. Take care not to walk on or around the spot during that time. When you apply the last layer, use a putty knife or even your finger to smooth the filler with the laminate floor around it. With a clean rag, wipe off excess filler.
Once the top layer has dried completely, use a paint pen or floor repair marker to blend the filled spot with the rest of the flooring.
Replace Lamonate Plank/ Laminate Boards
If you feel that the plank is too damaged and just replacing it would be easier than other methods, you are free to go for it.

No matter how careful we are, nicks, dents, and mistakes happen more than we would like to admit in our industry, and its common practice to fill in nail holes and minor gaps with close-matching wood filler.
When extreme repairs are required on severely damaged areas, these situations often require board replacement. Using wood filler on large jobs is usually not recommended.

It doesnt look perfect, but it is a whole lot better than a gouged or missing chunk of flooring and a lot less invasive than board replacement. This is also a good stop gap repair to take care of problem spots until a more comprehensive restoration of the floors fits the schedule and budget.

If you have a leftover scrap of finished flooring, practice on it before trying the repair on your floor. Heres how to go about repairing your floor:
- Scrape: To repair a minor scrape on the surface of the finish, try applying paste wax to the spot. Once the wax has dried, use a clean soft cloth to wipe off any excess and bring back the shine.
- Scratch: For a shallow scratch, use a furniture touch up pen that matches the color of the wood. A brown marker or shoe polish will also work if you can find the right shade to match. Wipe off any excess before it dries.
- Gouge: For a deeper scratch or small gouge, rub a matching colored wax filler stick or brown crayon on the spot until the nick is filled. Rub the spot with a soft cloth to remove any excess wax.

Epoxy For Small Holes In Wood Floors
Use this approach when soundness of the wood floor surface is more important than a perfect match to surrounding floor area. Do not use this approach for plastic-veneer wood floor surfaces.
For very small areas of gouge or lost material and where the color still matches the surrounding floor I sometimes fill the spot with clear epoxy. That will leave a slightly glossy spot that can be roughened with your scrubby sponge or buffer once the epoxy is thoroughly dry.
Watch out: for other readers we want to make clear that while epoxy resins and other synthetic resins are popular in the flooring industry and while theyâre used in many industrial coatings, never use epoxy on historic wooden floors or artifacts. The epoxy is durable but is so difficult to remove in the future that it is not used in those situations.

Has your dust mop ever gotten caught on a splinter in your wood floor? It’s aggravating, and the temptation is to pull that little sucker right up. But that would be the worst thing to do. The splinter might rebel and take a few more inches of wood with it.
The best thing to do is to stop and fix it, which is an easy task.
First, remove any threads of the dust mop or rag that have gotten caught, as well as any dirt under the splinter. This can be done with dental floss or with a toothpick. Then insert a few drops of carpenter’s glue with the clean side of the toothpick. Key words: “a few drops.”

Repair Hardwood Floor Scratches
Minor scratches in wood floors often can be buffed away using steel wool or hand-sanding with progressively finer sandpaper grits.
When sanding minor scratches, restrict your sanding to the scratched area, feathering only slightly into the surrounding surface. Always sand or buff only in line with the wood grain.
