Best Cleaner For Hardwood Floors

There are several different ways that you can mix up your own hardwood floor cleaner. DIY cleaners all use simple ingredients that you probably already have in your home, and that cost a fraction of what youd spend on a commercial cleaner.

The best hardwood floor cleaner will effectively remove the dirt and grime without harming the finish of your hardwood flooring. If you are going to clean old hardwood floors, particularly those that havent been cleaned in a while, try one of these gentle recipes. Your floors will shine once again.

  • Mop with a microfiber pad

Combine the Castile soap, water, and essential oil and pour it into the spray bottle. Replace the lid and shake vigorously. Test the homemade cleaner on an inconspicuous area of your hardwood floors, like under a piece of furniture, to ensure it wont cause damage.

Working in small areas, spray the solution onto the floors. Be careful not to overspray too much of the homemade wood floor cleaner to avoid damaging the floorboards. This is also an excellent solution to clean and shine bamboo floors and those made from laminate.

Using a back and forth motion, work the floor cleaning solution along the grain of the wood, with the microfiber mop. Continue to work in small areas being sure to rinse and squeeze any excess water off the mop.

To be honest, I didnt expect to find a complete list of the ingredients in this product, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that their website actually has what looks like the full list here!

Im fairly certain that this is something new, so bravo to the Clorox Company for listening to their customers and being more transparent with their product labeling!

That being said, there are a few ingredients on that list that are on my personal list of chemicals to avoid in cleaning products:

Ethoxylated alcohol

Can becontaminatedwith the hidden ingredients, ethylene oxide and/or 1,4 dioxane, during the manufacturing process. Both of these have been classified as carcinogenic to humans by the EPA. Read more about the ethoxylation process here.

Fragrance

This term is very ambiguous manufacturers can put it on a label to describe any number of the more than 3,000 different chemicals that are known to be used in fragrance compounds. I do appreciate that The Clorox Company is now transparent in their labeling and provide a complete list of the common fragrance ingredients used in their products.

That being said, I do try to avoid artificial fragrances when possible since theyre well known now for being linked to a long list of health problems like allergies, chemical sensitivities, and reproductive and developmental issues.

How To Clean Laminate Wood

Caring for wood-look laminate flooring is relatively easy. Wipe up spills as they happen and sweep or vacuum frequently. For deeper cleaning, you can use a steam mop but avoid wet mopping that can cause the underlayers to warp. Avoid harsh cleaners like pine oil or any cleaner that promises to leave a shine. The waxy build-up will leave the laminate looking dull. Opt for a small amount of plain dishwashing liquid in warm water to dampen your mop.

How To Make Wood Floors Shine Naturally

We all want shiny floors, right!?

Youll be excited to know that in addition to its cleaning properties, vinegar helps with creating shine, although an even better shine maker is olive oil.

Seriously! Olive oil is fantastic when you add a tiny amount to your homemade wood floor cleaning solution. You only need a few drops, as it goes a long way.

First, to get shiny floors, you need to vacuum well and make sure you wring out the mop before using it. Too much liquid can leave smears and risk damage to wood flooring.

Always wipe up spills straight away too. And my best tip is to make sure you mop following the wood grain direction.

Several mops over the same area should bring out the natural wood shine nicely.

Considerations Before You Get Started

  • Check if your floor is sealed. Before you begin cleaning your hardwood floors, it’s important to know what type of finish has been applied to the flooring. Is the floor sealed with a polyurethane finish? If a drop of water sits on the surface, then the floor is sealed and can be cleaned with a water-based solution. If the drop of water is absorbed quickly, the sealant is worn away or was never applied. If the floor is unsealed, you want to limit the amount of water used for cleaning. “I suggest using a dust mop regularly, so there is never too much buildup. When you need to do a deeper clean, use a damp microfiber cloth and dry immediately with a dry microfiber cloth,” says Witulski.
  • Clear the clutter. Pick up any clutter and remove small items, such as area rugs, from the floor for faster, easier cleaning.
  • Find the right time. Pick a time when foot traffic will be minimal, like when your family is out of the house.
  • Plan a route. Start at one corner of the room and work toward the door to prevent leaving footsteps on a clean floor.
  • Speed up drying time. Turn on ceiling fans or add a circulating fan to help speed the drying time.

Of course life has changed a bit since I first experimented with homemade natural cleaner recipes years ago. Ive had a few more kids . Schooling and working from home makes for crazy hours sometimes. In fact, I often get the question, how do you do it all?!
