Visitors exploring the Santa Barbara and Ventura counties coast will discover many wonderful attractions Campers at Emma Wood State Beach Campground are right on the edge of the sand with great ocean views. All up and down the coast are interesting places to stop.

Emma Wood State Beach Overview

Emma Wood State Beach campground has 90 beach-front primitive campsites and all have beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. All campsites are for self-contained vehicles only . The campsites are not too level and may contact a mixture of asphalt, dirt, rocks and debris but hey you cant beat the beachfront property! The maximum trailer/RV length ranges from 40 to 52 feet. Campsites can have up to 3 vehicles and 8 people.

This is a primitive campground and there is no water, dump station, electricity, phones or tables. There are about 6 vault toilets located at the check in station. You can make reservations from mid-May through Labor Day. After that it is first-come, first-serve. Keep in mind that high-tides may close the campground at any time .

Group and hike/bike camping are also available at Emma Wood Group and Ventura River Group Camps. The group sites offer developed tent camping for groups of up to 30 people and primitive RV camping for groups up to 50 people and 20 vehicles. The maximum length for an RV is 45 feet. Facilities include restrooms, water , fire rings, tables, and a lighted parking lot.

Emma Wood State Beach Campground includes North Beach Campground off Highway 101 in Ventura. The North Beach Campground features oceanfront sites along State Beach Access Road. Camping is limited to self-contained RVs or trailers . There are few amenities other than portable toilets and rocks formed into campfire circles, but the views are spectacular – unobstructed oceanfront camping. The North Beach Campground has 86 sites in two areas along the beach. Railroad tracks pass behind the campground, but most visitors don’t mind the occasional train.

Emma Wood State Beach Campground also has a Hike & Bike Site, Enroute camping, and a Ventura River Group Camps.

The Enroute site is for self-contained RVs or trailers arriving late in the day. Occupants of these sites must vacate them by 9:00 AM the following morning.

Emma Wood State Beach North Beach Campground

Emma Wood State Beach â North Beach, Ventura, CA

Just north of Ventura, Emma Wood State Beach’s North Beach Campground has 86 ocean-front campsites for self-contained RVs or trailers. No tents are permitted. The sites are dirt parking spaces along the ocean side of State Beach Access Road off Highway 101. Some of the spaces have uneven surfaces. There are no facilities other than a portable chemical toilet. Most sites have rocks already assembled into a campfire circle.

High tides during the winter months often close the campground. Reservations are available for camping dates from mid-May through Labor Day weekend. At other timesthe sites are first come, first served.

The size of the sites varies. In general, they range from 20 feet up to 45 feet. Most are back-in sites. The state park website states that RVs are limited to 40 feet because of the small turn-around area. Peak season is from May 15 to September 15.

Emma Wood’s Ventura River Group Camp has tent and RV sites for groups as large as 50 as well as Enroute RV sites and Hike and Bike sites.

Ventura River Group Campground

The Ventura River Group Campground has four group tent sites. Each site can accommodate between 9 and 30 people along with 5 vehicles. These are walk-in sites, although the walk is short. Amenities include campfire rings, tables, piped water, restrooms, and cold water showers. There is also a Group RV Site which can hold up to 20 self-contained RVs or trailers. With awesome beachfront camping and beautiful panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Emma Wood State Beach offers campers and day users an incredible place to unwind and soak up the golden rays of Southern Californias summer sunshine.

Positioned along the southern California coast, and christened after one of Venturas late 19th-century settlers, Emma Wood State Beach marks the definitive bend in the coast between Ventura proper and the points and reefs beyond.

With a 90-site self-contained campground that is about as close to the ocean. Emma Woodis a popular year-round destination for swimming, surfing, fishing, and hiking. The Mediterranean-like climate is warm, dry, and breezy during the summer, often prevailing with cooler, damper winter conditions.

The Ventura River Estuary is at the mouth of the Ventura River at the southeast end of the park. Several ecological communities come together near the mouth of the River, creating sand dunes, a floodplain, cobblestone beach, woodlands, and wetlands.

Botanists will enjoy over 300 plant species in the area while wildlife lovers can get pleasure from a variety of wildlife including raccoons, red-tailed hawks, pelicans, and great blue herons.

The beach offers a view of Anacapa Island and the occasional dolphin may be seen just offshore as well as the sporadic spray of water from a migrating whale.

    Directions:

    From Main Street in downtown Ventura take Main Street west out of town. Just before the highway on-ramp to Highway 1, turn left into the campground entrance road and proceed under Highway 1 to the campground entrance.

    Emma Wood Group Campground has group and hike/bike camp spots only. Maximum RV’s length is 45 feet. The campground is open all year. Its located right on the beach in Ventura near the Ventura County Fairground and the Ventura Pier. A restroom and beach shower/wash is available. Services are not available at the campground however, downtown Ventura is just a mile from the campground. Fire rings are available. The group campground is located against the freeway and also along the railroad tracks. There is considerable highway and rail noise.

    Emma Wood State Beach North Beach

    North Beach at Emma Wood State Beach is a long linear RV campground right on the ocean. Unfortunately there is no tent camping at this location as they only allow self contained vehicles. Most of the campground only has a rocky barrier separating it from the ocean waves. At high tides the campground can sometimes be closed. Railroad tracks and Highway 101 are behind the beach and can be noisy. There are free parking spaces along Pacific Coast Highway outside of the north state park entrance, but otherwise there is no day-use parking here. The main part of Emma Wood State Beach has a day-use lot and picnic facilities, etc. The paved Omer Rains Bike Trail begins at Emma Wood State Beach and goes eight miles to San Buenaventura State Beach. From Ventura drive north on Highway 101 and take exit 72 then look for state beach signs.

    Directions:

    Northbound on Highway-101 from Ventura, take Exit 72 onto Pacific Coast Highway, Northbound. Cross under Highway-101, then continue over the railroad bridge. After passing over the railroad, look of the parks sigh on the left side in just a few blocks on the left side.

    Road biking is popular from this location. Riders can ride an old section of Pacific Coast Highway with bike lanes.

    Emma Wood State Beach Campground in Ventura, California

    Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on snow conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.

    In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.
